Diamond Clarity

Diamonds form deep within the earth, under conditions of extreme heat and pressure. Because of this, almost all diamonds contain tiny imperfections within, called inclusions, or on their surface, called blemishes. Clarity grade refers to the degree which these things are present.

The Gemological Institute of America has established an 11 point scale for Clarity grading, which ranges from flawless (FL) to diamonds with obvious and severe inclusions (I3). The stones below demonstrate the steps in-between.

IF (Internally Flawless)

No inclusions, only blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10x magnification.

VVS1, VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included)

Inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification.

Inclusions are clearly visible under 10x magnification but can be characterized as minor.

Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader using 10x magnification.
