Faceted gemstones can be cut or fashioned into a variety of different shapes. The shape of a gemstone affects its brilliance, color, and luster. Often, the shape of an individual stone is chosen because of qualities of the original, rough stone as it was taken out of the ground - a certain cut may be able to preserve more gemstone material or downplay its inclusions.
